Lithops: Nature's
"Living Stones"
The plants are known in the native
language by the descriptive name of "Living Stones." They resemble
pebbles in form and color. The Lithops grow in the very dry desert of
SW Africa. Some in clefts of rock, and some buried in the desert loam
or in the sand where they obtain protection from the grilling sun. The
chief growing season is in the summer. The plant likes full sun and
plenty of ventilation. In summer, the pot can be fairly moist, but
from September on, the water should be withheld almost entirely. The
soil should be 2/3 sand, 1/3 soil. The different varieties have names
like Bella, Annae, Inea, and Julii. Growing and collecting Lithops
makes an interesting hobby.
