Scented geraniums are herbs grown not for their flowers but for their capacity to summon the scents and flavors of different plants.  They thrive in the limited light of winter, as long as they stay indoors where they are protected from freezing.  Fragrance range from wild rose spices, including cinnamon, lemon, lavender, apple, mint, orange and ginger.  These wonders have been around for hundreds of years; in recent history, their popularity peeked in Victorian gardens.  The plants themselves do well in containers.  They are compact and easy to keep in shape-outdoor patio plants in summer, houseplants in the fall.  Indoors, a hand brushed over the foliage releases their scent and it fills the room.  Unlike the herbs and spices they imitate the foliage of scented geraniums loses aroma when cooked.  When using them in cooking they should be added at the end of the cooking.

You can find scented geraniums year around at our greenhouse in Adel, Iowa.  We are open 7 days a week.
