Heirloom Seeds and Plants
Heirloom seeds and plants are those rare seeds that are untampered,
hybrid or changed in any way from their original construction by the
Creator in the beginning of time. They still contain the natural
nutrients, vitamins, cancer inhibitors, phytochemicals, etc. they were
created with and were intended to contain for all time.
Today gardeners and farmers are inundated with seed catalogs, baby
plants at the nurseries, and mail order plants from infanthood to
maturity, but the majority of these seeds and plants are hybrids of some
sort. They have been cross bred with other varieties within or without
their own families for size, color, flavor, meatiness, early development
or maturity and many other reasons. Due to this process many of the
natural nutrients these plants contained are bred out or changed, creating
a sort of Frankenstein effect. They may look, feel or taste better, but
they are not better for you.
A perfect example of this is corn. Corn a hundred years ago contained a
natural cancer inhibitor on the outer layer of its kernel. After years of
cross breeding and hybridization, today's corn no longer contains that
natural cancer inhibitor and has lost much of its nutritional value as
well. It is virtually impossible to find an heirloom variety of corn in
any of the mainstream markets.
Heirloom collection is not a new concept. In fact it is as old as the
Bible. Deuteronomy 22:9 says, "Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with
divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the
fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled." Like many other aspects of life,
this principle has been forsaken in recent years.
