Don Harvey

Mary Harvey

Don Harvey has been in the greenhouse business since his beginning in 1936.

Don’s parents John and Agnes Harvey raised their family growing, selling, and wildcrafting flowers and plants. The first greenhouse was located on Highway 90 South of DeSoto, Iowa about 8 miles from the location of Harvey Floral Co. today. They grew many acres of gladiolus and cut for the florist. Don and his dad ran routes across the state of Iowa supplying florists with fresh cut gladiolus. In 1976 the business was purchased by Don and Mary and many changes has been made since then. The greenhouses are filled with every plant imaginable. The diverse variety of greenery, cactus, flowering plants, herbs perennials, and annuals are available. The greenhouses are open year around and customers are allowed to shop over an acre of greenhouses.

Mary and several of her employees are certified Master Gardeners. The employees are very knowledgeable with their plants and can assist the customer in placing the plant in growing conditions where the plant and customer will be happy.

Don and Mary share ten children from previous marriages and sometimes they can persuade their children and grandchildren to help in the greenhouse.

Don graduated from High School at DeSoto, Iowa and from the school of hard knocks. Living, reading, and self-taught : Don is one of the best growers in the Mid-West.

Mary Frances Lee (Harvey) grew up in the Ozarks at Versailles, Missouri and attended Central Missouri University, Warrensburg, Missouri.
